Abstract moment of the week #4

All credit to the writers of Coronation Street for their brilliantly random and unlikely reference to Mark E Smith in one of tonight's episodes.  It was so casually delivered by shopkeeper Dev with regard to an event at the Town Hall for local business people "...with pre-dinner drinks in the Mark E Smith Suite"... that it could easily have been missed.  But if,  like me,  you were still laughing through the next few lines of dialogue on noticing it (in spite of another harrowing storyline going on!), you might have a sudden hankering to hear some Fall.

  1. Oh how I'd wish witnessed that. Nice touch by the writers. Sadly, I haven't watched Coronation St. properly since Mike Baldwin and (whisper it) Ken Barlow were fighting over Deirdre. Will play some more Fall later, though.

    1. It was subtle but perfect!
Corrie is the one soap I have time for, with some thought-provoking storylines sensitively handled and some excellent acting, but it's moments like this that truly set it apart!
(Btw, been trying to post a comment on GFT but comment box keeps freezing - hopefully will be able to get it to work later!)

    2. Will look into it, C. I've had a few ups and downs there as far as posting and gadgets are concerned. Might be the template. May have to change it. Pleas let me know if you continue to have problems.

    3. Have tried again this morning, SB, I can get as far as typing in the comment box but then it freezes so I can't publish... weird, as it was obviously ok a few days ago (and maybe the problem is at my end?) If no comments from me for a while that will be why... hope it resolves itself!
...But I didn't know that Mungo Zeppelin were flipping an A side with a Led Jerry :-)

  2. I remember once that Half Man Half Biscuit got a mention on Byker Grove. I didn't really know anything about the band beyond their name at the time, but I still thought they were a funny choice for a kids' telly show (this was pre Ant & Dec, and actually I think it was even pre PJ & Duncan being popstars). Stuck in my head ever since, probably cos it was so odd!

    1. Oh that's brilliant and so obscure - I think these name-drops must be in-jokes from the programme makers. Don't think I've ever seen a whole episode of Byker Grove, it's already gone up in my estimation on hearing that, though!

  3. I saw my first episode of Corrie for years on Friday while staying with an Aunt and heard the reference to M.E.S. too! In fact it was the first thing I told Mrs S on my return home! Thanks for confirming that I wasn't hearing things! It's always good to hear The Fall.

    1. Sounds like you watched it at just the right time. I thought I was imagining it at first!

  4. A friend of mine used to write for The Archers and always managed to slip in a few in jokes, although they mainly revolved around naming cows after mutual friends - you have to do what it takes to get you through I guess ! He now writes for Emmerdale (which I have never ever watched) and I do hope he gets inspired and starts sending them to get home furnishings from Inspiral Carpets....

    1. Hello you!
Brilliant - perhaps he could have some Farmers Boys rescuing the sheep who were injured in Left Field by some Nine Inch Nails...? Oh dear, those are desperate, sorry, I'll be thinking of names all night now...

    1. I'll be listening out for more, that's for sure! I don't mind telling you, Old Pa, I will be stocking up on the tissues before tonight's episode, I'm going to weep buckets!

  6. Who isn't always in the mood for some Fall? I want names.

I actually watched a program on Andy Warhol...where Brix Smith was called in as a fashion consultant...not one mention of her, and her horrible voice, having been in the Fall. Not a word.

    1. Ha, Brix turns up on various programmes here too, mostly about fashion, and I find it hard to equate her with the same woman from Fall days. (Didn't she also go out with Nigel Kennedy? Don't hear much mention of that either!)
