Gotta have a little moan! About adverts (again)...
It's the ones on TV that have been
specifically made to resonate within the current situation.
You may wonder why I'm formatting this post the way I am
but all you have to do is to imagine that every line here
is being spoken by a different person, via their separate video link.
It's the fashionable thing to do now, to show how we are
all connected, even when we can't actually be
in the same room.
But it's not that in itself which irritates me.
It's the fact that
they break up their sentences half way through.
That's the thing - they don't even get to finish their own
sentences!
Some people just get
three or four words.
Whereas I only have two which spring to mind each time these ads come on the screen.
I can make do with one word!
ReplyDeleteYep, it's become an irritating trope. I also really hate the current trend where multinational banks pretend they're local, things like HSBC advertising in Manchester using Mancunian slang like 'Manc' and 'mint'. Fuck off- you're not local, you're based in Hong Kong not Stretford.
ReplyDeleteExactly. It's all so unoriginal too.
DeleteThere is an easy solution to this, C. STOP WATCHING ADVERTS!
ReplyDeleteI did, years ago, and my life is so much better without them.
(That said, I did used to write the bloody things for a living, so I can't really talk.)
You're right of course - and whenever we can we make a cuppa, go to the loo or search for some paint to watch dry - but still seem to end up catching a few. And they're all getting like this. Ugh. I'm sure you'd never have subjected us to such lows!
DeleteSo true and agree with what everyone has said. Tough to avoid the averts though especially if you watch the kind of telly that's funded by them - It does seem callous however to follow a paricularly harrowing piece of news footage about the current crisis with a couple of ads for funeral plans and will-writing services. 'Tis the times we are living through but I don't like it one bit.
ReplyDeleteYes, those ads seem to be either tasteless or twee, there's not much in between! Although best avoided they do make for interesting social history I think - very much a reflection of what's going on so that perhaps in 10 years' time if we were to delve into the archives and see them again we'd feel quite shocked. I must admit I do like watching some of those ads from previous decades when they make you appreciate just how much has changed.
DeleteBrilliant post, C. I assume you have seen a commercial like this as well:

Ah thanks for that Brian - that video really sums it up. Clichés and cheap sombre piano music everywhere. Too much!
DeleteVery well put
ReplyDeleteand I wholeheartedly
ReplyDeleteagree
ReplyDeleteHaha, thanks Darcy! Irritating, aren't they?
