You know, I don't think they did. When I wrote that I wondered if there might be some lime green or grapefruit yellow ones but now I come to think of it, I can't imagine anything but tangerine!
Mr Hackett has asked me to reply on his behalf. He would have replied himself but he was so shocked to discover that the car may actually enable you to pull young ladies in real life he had to go for a lie down.
The website below contains a gallery of the last known photos of Bond Bugs by serial number.

The Bug in the advert was indeed orange as are the majority of those in the gallery. But some are different colours (possibly resprays), including one that was pink. Apparently it is now orange, part of the repair job needed when it was "Stolen by scum and wrecked 2005".
Dear Mr Bugg Ta so much for your quick reply and all the information, that's smashing. Please give my regards to Rodney -and also to your research assistant, triffic! Luv Dolly
This car is new to me - don't remember it at all but remember the 1970 language and girl's style. Think Rodney might still be with us and living in Tamworth!
They even have their own appreciation group. https://www.facebook.com/groups/10879263747
Ah, sweet to see that Facebook page, thanks Alyson. I'm sure I've seen a few in the flesh, although I might be imagining it and have only seen in film/TV....
Oh, I just looked it up and see that, yes, there is someone of that name in Tamworth. In which case, if he ever happens to read this, I do hope he won't mind the playful banter above!
Did they even come in any other colour?

DeleteA colour ad would've been nice, though - the dress would definitely have been pink, green and purple.
DeleteEnough of this ill-informed speculation. Write to Rodney Hackett in Tamworth and get the facts, man!
DeleteDear Rodney
DeleteDo they only come in orange? A pink one would be fab if you've got one.
Thanks very much.

Fabulous! Whilst I can’t vouch for Messrs. Hackett & Bugg, I would highly recommend this lot, who are clearly fans as they named their band after it:

Oh yes, the Bug Club! Excellent, thank you Khayem.

I'm presuming it came with a tow bar and a trailer with a pigeon coop fixed on the back. That's the only way I can make any sense out of that advert.
ReplyDeleteAh, brilliant - now that sounds right up my street!
DeleteTop speed of 80 mph apparently.
DeleteWow! But I don't think I'd want to test that out...
