Springwatching: Sweet Thing reprise

This is what I looked out of the window to see (and hear) this morning.  Unfortunately I think this little fellow left the nestbox (as mentioned in yesterday's post) a tad too early, as his siblings are still inside.  I don't hold out too much hope for him but I was able to quietly and gently get close enough for this photo.  It's one of those difficult dilemmas - not wanting to interfere with the natural way of things but finding it hard not to feel slightly responsible for his welfare because I can see him out there looking rather vulnerable (as he can't fly yet).  In this case I think I just have to trust things to fate - at least the parent bluetits are around and I'm doing my very best to keep out the neighbour's cats.  Fingers crossed.

    1. Thanks, SB. No sign of him this morning so who knows what's happened to him, but in a bid to stay optimistic I tell myself he's managed to move on somewhere safe...

  2. It's always a huge worry to see these fledgings out on their own. The parents will know about this chick and will be taking care of it I'm sure.

Last month I had a couple of Blackbird and Dunnock fledglings in my garden. I have two cats and they were eager to get out in the garden and enjoy the sun but I kept them indoors just in case.

    1. Thanks, EXPO67 - I must say both parents have been so attentive and busy with food trips since the eggs hatched that I'm sure all the chicks are in the best possible hands (feet?/wings?/beaks?!) I like to think so anyway!
Hope your blackbbird and dunnock fledglings did well too, they're so vulnerable when they first leave the nest aren't they? - hopefully your cats never got to see them though!

  3. Me and The Boy had to go out this morning and inspect a blue egg in the back yard. It was busted....don't know if it was hatched or a coon busted it for breakfast.

Hopefully the former...we need birds for our feeder.

    1. Yes - hopefully the former! Wonder what kind of bird it was?
