Enthused by the good folks over at Grown Up Backwards and Unthought Of, Though Somehow, who were in turn inspired by a post over on Tune Doctor (still with me…?) I’ve been enjoying thinking about ‘perfect pop’ for the last couple of days. Big thanks to them! And hoping they won't mind me picking up the baton and running with it here...
It’s impossible not to start compiling lists in your head once you start considering what constitutes your perfect pop song. There are many - but I’ve limited my list to these three. They make me smile and want to dance and in the sublime sweetness of their melodies, brief though they may be, I can forget the cold rain outside and the mundane problems of daily life. That’s what it’s all about, isn’t it? Hope they work for you too.

Kelli Ali - Here Comes The Summer
Big Star - September Gurls
The Monkees - A Little Bit Me, A little Bit You
Perfection.....
ReplyDelete(PS. When I was very very young and it was raining outside, my Dad & I would squash our noses to the window and sing 'rain, rain, go away, come again another day...' - I'm going to try a few choruses this evening if you'd like to join in!)
Thanks. Well, I tried the 'rain' chorus, but it doesn't seem to have worked... We'll just have to stick to playing escapist summery tunes instead!
DeleteIn my humble opinion there could never be a list of perfect pop that didn't include September Gurls - each time I hear it I could almost die happy as those last chords fade... a pefect poptasm
ReplyDeleteMmm, it just hits the spot! And I like that word 'poptasm' (so much better than 'poptastic' too!)
DeleteUtterly spot on. Not come across Kelli Ali before but that song is just wonderful. Reminds me of Saint Etienne a little (another group who have a host of songs that could be added to a 'perfect pop' list). Big Star and The Monkees more or less define pop music at its best. Thanks for joining in.
ReplyDeleteThanks and glad you liked the Kelli Ali (from the excellent album 'Tigermouth') - know absolutely what you mean about Saint Etienne and indeed they should be in the selection too.. Might have to burn a 'perfect pop' CD now I think - the list is getting longer!
DeleteFor summery pop I'd add The Lovin' Spoonful's Do You Believe In Magic; and for rainy pop Bus Stop by The Hollies. Both big faves of mine.
ReplyDeleteA fine, warming selection, especially the Monkees. How can you not dance to that? I'd sneak in 'Beach Baby' by First Class as well...but we've all got our personal favourites.
ReplyDeleteHere's Where the Story Ends - Sundays.
ReplyDeleteThanks Monkey, Kolley and e.f. - everyone must have their favourites that just work on that pop level, I keep adding more to my list too...
ReplyDeleteMust say I like the sub-genres of 'summery pop' and 'rainy pop', Monkey - and would definitely include Bus Stop in the rainy one too (and Postcard in the summery one).
Summer means at least one thing...and has for the last 18 years...Crooked Rain/Crooked Rain will get a few weeks in heavy rotation.
