Bruce & I

“I had one of those dreams last night,” I said to Mr SDS this morning. Yes, one of those dreams - you know the kind I mean. “It was with, oh, Bruce whatsisname,” I explained. We then went through a number of Bruces with whom I'm very glad I didn't do unspeakable things in my slumber:

“Bruce Dickinson?”

Ugh no, not him with that histrionic voice!  That would have made me run to the hills.

“Bruce Forsyth?”

Cue countless catchphrases leading to innuendo overload:
Nice to see you, to see you...
Give us a twirl!
You get nothing for a pair!
Higher... Lower...

"Bruce Lee?  Bruce Springsteen?  Bruce Willis?"

But no, it was none of the above, thankfully. It was, you know, the one who made 'Withnail & I'... Bruce Robinson. I've no idea why he turned up in my dream but I don't mind admitting that I'm glad he did - far better than Ricky Gervais, whom I've had twice, for some bizarre reason.  But Bruce Robinson - such a talented, witty, edgy and really rather gorgeous man, I'm sure you'd agree. Apart from being a fan of his first film - who isn't?! -  I also enjoyed his cameo role in 'Still Crazy' about the fictional band Strange Fruit, and his biography 'Smoking in Bed' (thanks, A!).  I warmed to him even more when I read that he checks his kindling for spiders before lighting a fire so as not to inadvertently incinerate the little creatures, and that he's written some books for children which are illustrated by his artist wife. And last night he... well, I won't say... but it was all very strange and fruity and crazy indeed, as well as being in a public place in broad daylight (blush).  It was as if I'd "gone on holiday by mistake".

  1. Sounds like material for a (very) graphic novel.

    1. Perhaps I could ask Bruce to write a screenplay for it!

  2. Ooh er! That's a great film, of course, but I'm trying to get a picture of Mr. Robinson in my head and can't recall the man at all. I must say that Bruce Forstyth would surely have been at least a little entertaining as well?

    1. He doesn't seem to appear on much but I first saw him being interviewed about the making of Withnail & I and he stuck in my mind ever since... But I think I'll try and keep Bruce Forsyth well away from my dream antics, entertaining or not!

  3. Thank you... he was very beautiful! But I think he's ageing really well, although I know what you mean about the way we view those of our own vintage. Perhaps that's why old ladies flirt with young lads - they still see them as being the right / similar age!

    1. Haha - I know, shocking, isn't it? I've no idea why - and twice! - I mean, he does make me laugh but that's as far as it goes... Of course now he's entered my consciousness again that may not be all, and I'll probably have another dream tonight :-(

    3. No, stop!
(Actually had a dream about watching a band at an outdoor gig, the percussionist was using a giant whisk and there was a dog jumping over it...complete nonsense...Not as good as the Bruce Robinson dream of course but better than a Gervais one!)

  5. That's so true - why oh why?!
I remember once having a dream about a man I worked with, whom I'd never looked at in that way at all in real life, and next morning when I said 'Hello' to him I could swear he gave me a very knowing look...

  6. Some images are very difficult to erase once implanted, Bruce Forsyth in any erotic context is one such. You've caused me great distress...

    1. Hi and thanks for dropping by. Oops, I am sorry about the distress caused, I know these thoughts can be traumatic. Every time it comes into your head you'll just have to "think of England"...

  7. 'Ooh' and indeed 'er'! Where do our slumbering brains dig stuff up from? Such vivid dreams one night, then, seemingly, nothing the next and all kinds of half (or totally) forgotten characters cropping up in cameo roles. It can't all be down to too much cheese before bedtime, surely?

    1. Indeed.. It's as if our minds and imaginations just keep on rolling on drunkenly while we're not 'there', rummaging through everything we've ever seen and done as well as those we haven't, picking out bits at total random and mixing them all together to make some weird hallucinatory alternative life.
(But sometimes they're better than reality!)
