Adverts that caught my eye - something from Milos Forman, before he directed One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and more:
And apparently the Blackheath Foot'N'Death Men, who appeared at 'a nasty ball' advertised below, were hairy, freak, counter-culture Morris Dancers:
Hawkwind...The Pink Fairies.
ReplyDeleteWith allies like that how could "Nasty Tales" fail?
Indeed... :-)
DeleteI could read about this stuff for hours: all the interconnections between Nasty Tales, IT, Oz and the Oz trials, Mick Farren (RIP) and all the counter-culture characters and bands who fought for equality and against censorship. For all their hairiness I think we have a lot to thank the protagonists for!
I'm enjoying reading through this one copy of Frendz that's on the bookshelf here; a lot has changed, particularly the style of language! But at the same time a lot of the wider political issues haven't.
So of the time. I want to build a ship and get to that show.
ReplyDeleteIt's quite something to imagine - I wonder what the memorable 'bizarre attractions' were too.
DeleteI sometimes thought I was born too late... but in reality... I suppose my 76 & 77 was "the time" for me
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean. I often think I'd loved to have been a teenager in the mid-60s, - or been born a couple of years earlier to have been able to embrace more fully the very beginnings of punk. But all things considered I'm really happy with the way it is. We had it good - and we're still so young ;-)
ReplyDeleteAt risk of alienating everyone here and also conversely because they're a pretty open minded crew open to all opinions - there is nothing good about Morris dancers, nothing good even about freaky counter culture Morris dancers, and I've been dragged along to see more than my share..... They are without doubt musically, stylistically and terpsichorially the most reactionary and revisionist bunch of excuses for dancers I've ever met - I hope that Lemmy was at the Nasty Ball and sorted them out. My motto for now and ever is something close to 'kill all beardy Morris dancer wanker scum slowly and with extreme prejudice'.
ReplyDeletePhew that's better now I've got that off my chest. remember, when you hear about the series of gruesome deaths involving handkerchiefs and sticks where they shouldn't be, that the signs were there all along.....
Go for it, Bel Mondo! I got a kick from reading that, hope you did too - I do so admire a daring streak!
DeleteAnd there's a beautiful irony in that the Nasty Ball was in support of freedom of speech....
So am I.
Still laughing... :-)
The Blackheath foot & death men became simply Blackheath Morris and are still going strong. We can be seen in the Olympic closing ceremony London 2012!.We feature in the Eric Idle scene `Always look on the bright side of life`.We are clashing sticks over Eric`s head!
ReplyDeleteMany thanks for contributing and for the info. From the 'Nasty Ball' to the 2012 Olympics - quite a feat!
