Stress-buster
Quickie post: Heard on 6Music today, and you know when your ears just prick up and you stop what you're doing - it's just too good not to want to say "Hey, what do you think of this, I love it!" in the hope that someone else will agree. Reminds me, sort of, of the more melodic elements of New Model Army... there must be others that I can't bring to mind too at this moment but it's got that whole bouncy, aggressively energetic post-punk feel to it... '80/'81, Peel... you know what I mean. Probably a very appropriate title for many of us on this spinning rock right now too. Apparently the band, Talk Show, are from South London. Some great healthy stuff going on in the music scene right now it seems to me - will be listening out for more.

Yes I totally get how this would have made your ears prick up. Takes me back a few decades too.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, Stress - I had thought this year might be an improvement on the last few but it certainly hasn't started out that way.
I just love it, Alyson, it does all the right things for me! I had high hopes for just making this year as good as possible but it hasn't started off very well for the world... then again, perhaps that means it can only get better (she says optimistically).
DeleteNew to me too. And nice!
ReplyDeleteGlad you like it. Just had to put it out there and hope to hear more from the band.
DeleteThere seems to be a crop of bands who hark back to that post-punk sound doing the rounds at the moment. I don't always catch the names of the artists concerned, but there's one song in particular that I always think must be an old Fall track, only to find out that it's actually brand new - pretty good though! I guess that's what happens when you get to be as old as I am!
ReplyDeleteYes, there's a lot of it about! I think I know the band you mean as thought the same about the Fall on hearing something on the radio recently, can't remember their name (this is where contemporary bands disappoint me though - so many crap names!)
DeleteI often wonder, is it that they've heard the bands they sound like and are directly influenced, or is it a case that they simply come up with a sound they like just as their predecessors did? A 'nature vs. nurture' conundrum perhaps!
That was the other point I meant to make in my comment - there are so many unimaginative (and difficult to Google) band names around at the moment. Talk Show, Sports Team, Pottery, Sorry, Dry Cleaning... they really don't help themselves! Think what you will about the music of bands like Porridge Radio and Warmduscher, at least they are relatively easy to track down online!
DeleteExactly. Plus I guess all the really good, snappy and most memorable band names have all been used up. Porridge Radio, though... how did they come up with that one?!
DeleteHi, C. It's been far too long. You know your pal has the most difficult band name of all time to find online... The The. I have shaken my fist at the laptop many times over that one.
DeleteAs for Talk Show, no doubt their parents have excellent record collections. This doesn't bother me a bit. Hearing a song like this makes me feel like my taste is still relevant.
I was just thinking about you Brian as have not seen any new posts for a while and hope all's well.
DeleteIndeed you'd think all bands now would aim for Google-able names, we can forgive those from our pre-internet days!
I found an interview with Talk Show and they mentioned their fondness for the Cure, Stranglers and New Order, which makes sense. Like you I find this a positive thing!
