Savages

I watched Savages on last night's 'Later...' and, this might sound like a strange response, but I felt so proud.   So proud that there are young women like these doing what they do, and doing it so well; I actually got a bit glassy-eyed.

In a world where women still - still! - sell themselves so short and aspire to ridiculously superficial ideals that prey on their low self-esteem, that very same low self-esteem that those ideals helped cultivate in the first place, we need Savages.  We really do.

I couldn't paste in the video but here's a youtube link to last night's performance:

Savages: Sad Person live (from Later with Jools Holland)

And here's another treat:

  1. Fantastic stuff -I know that Swiss Adam and The Robster have been raving about them and you can see why

  2. I'm familiar with their music as the band are 6Music favourites, but this is the first time I've watched them perform. Very impressive indeed.

    1. It's a stunning performance, isn't it? I saw their first performance on Later in 2012 and whilst I enjoyed it, I think they were yet to find their stage presence. Then seeing them on the 6 Music Festival from Bristol footage they really came into their own with a mesmerising rendition of Adore, so I was really looking forward to seeing them again. They certainly didn't disappoint!

  3. I know what you mean - if you like Adore I think you'll like the other track, and it's seeing them perform it that really does it for me too.

  4. Savages caught my attention too. Have you seen on YouTube the channel called 'What's In My Bag'? It's short films of bands showing and talking about records, books and films they've purchased from a record store in America. Savages are featured in one of them and what they've chosen might be thought of as being pretentious but I thought it really interesting as it hints at where they're coming from in terms of influences. Check it out.

    1. Thanks for that John, I didn't know of What's In My Bag? so have just watched and enjoyed it. Yes I picked up on some influences there and a few surprises too.
I'd like to go round that store and put a few things in my bag too - what would be in yours?!

    2. That's a very, very good question, C. Let me think. Off the top of my head: The Crassical collection (all the re-mixed Crass albums), any rare or out of print book by Patti Smith, the best of the Cuddly Toys cd (if such a thing exists?), a book about Punk I once wanted to read called Threat By Example, various spaghetti cowboy films on DVD with soundtracks by Ennio Morricone, a book about Sonic Youth I once saw in a shop years ago but have never seen since, and the Songs Of Praise cd by African Head Charge on the On-U Sound label. You did ask. I feel you must make a shopping list too now though and post it up on SDS. Ten items. You never know, your wishes might be granted and free gifts could wing their way to you.
