Mr SDS heard it earlier on the radio in the car, and said he thought I'd like it because it was a bit weird and arty. (He knows how to flatter me, that man.) Described by Greg James this afternoon (yes, on Radio 1!) as being what you might get if you put David Bowie, Village People and Franz Ferdinand into a blender, WHITE are a Glasgow five piece and this is their new single 'Blush'. I'd add that there is also a dollop of Edwyn Collins, a spoonful of Billy Mackenzie and perhaps even the merest pinch of Peter Murphy (sort of), oh and a sprinkling of sax that made me think of Blurt of all things. Funk it all up and serve immediately! I know that doesn't make sense but who cares.

Blush
Just a quickie music post tonight and it's a new one. It's also a very new one on me because I only heard it for the first time a few hours ago, and since then I've been jumping up and down thinking, who can I tell?! Why, you, of course!

That really is rather good, isn't it? Could be 1982 again. Must here more of them. BTW, there's a Blurt article in this month's Wire mag. Haven't read it but I was rather amused to see them back in print and available for browsing in Tesco.
ReplyDeleteGlad you think so, SB - yes very 1982 really. I couldn't imagine how it might sound to someone who wasn't familiar with those times, but I guess it might have the same effect as those originals did on us then.
DeleteI just listened to an earlier single, 'Future Pleasures' which has also got some Heaven 17 and Gang of Four going on.... It's good.
How weird about the Blurt article. Who could've predicted that?
Yes, a bit of disco Sylvester too, what a mixture!
ReplyDeleteFunnily enough I've started changing my mind about Today's Yoof and the music scene and radio just recently, having found I just can't listen to Radio 2 any more because it's all so safe and dated, whereas a few years ago you might at least hear something reasonably contemporary on there. (The car radio used to be tuned in to it because you could usually get an interesting discussion on Jeremy Vine.) But it seems just lately that Radio 1 are trying to expand a bit more and at least playing some stuff that doesn't seem that obviously daytime-radio-friendly like Slaves and Foals. And this song too. Still a lot of mainstream crap but then there always has been. So perhaps things *are* changing??
My word...Radio 1? Who'd have thunk it? What a great, eccentric tune - it's all the things you describe. I'm surprised 6Music haven't picked up on it, it's right up their street.
ReplyDeleteI know... Radio 1 is changing I think... we were out today and travelling back with the car tuned in to it heard this song again, followed not long after by 'Hey' by Slaves and on the way out we'd also heard Royal Blood. Yes, it is in amongst Little Mix and Meghan Trainor etc... but it shows that it's getting more diverse.
DeleteHow you and Greg James describe this is absolutely spot on - and yes, there's a bit of Sylvester in there as well. Have you heard FFS, the Sparks/Franz Ferdinand collaboration? If so, what do you think of that?
ReplyDeleteAnd 'weird and arty' is a compliment! It's a good thing.
The description doesn't sound that promising really - but somehow it all works!
DeleteI have heard FFS, and have seen a few clips, but for some reason they just don't work for me. However, I do like the fact that they're doing it, it's a quirky concept and the name is inspired. I guess sometimes it's just a fine line between what works for you and what doesn't.
Yes, weird and arty will do for me :-)
