Wonderful illustrations by American artist A B Frost, who was commissioned by Lewis Carroll during a visit to London in the 1870s. These images from the poem 'Phantasmagoria' were first published in the illustrated version of 'Rhyme? and Reason?' in 1883.
Yes, I should have posted these last night really... but I was too busy reminiscing whilst watching
'Goth At The BBC'!
Great! Must show them to Baby Bear. I missed the Goth show - will check it out once I've caught up with Sabbath on 'Classic Albums'.
ReplyDeleteHope Baby Bear likes the pics too.
DeleteSome great clips on the Goth prog, though as Swiss Adam says below it was a bit hit and miss - worth it though for some very nostalgic early stuff which was so evocative.
Cool. Digging your own Goth look.
DeleteTa SB - do you remember too that it wasn't even called Goth at the time, it was part of that whole 'positive punk'/'tribal' thing...maybe we even called it Gothic Punk??
DeleteIn my experience a Friday Halloween extends through Saturday.
ReplyDeleteThe illustrations are great but the photo is really fantastic.
Haha, I was far too smiley for serious gothness and the hair took ages to crimp to such voluminous size (had to make lots of tiny plaits tied up with cotton while wet, and then carefully unplait them all when dry...)
DeleteThat's a good thing...by my estimation. The look was a good one but anybody who's that miserable all the time isn't well enough to make fashion statements. :)
DeleteYou're efforts paid off.
Indeed, and I could never carry off the black lipstick look, it smudged with every smile!
DeleteIt's all fantastic.
ReplyDeleteLovely artwork isn't it, I thought you'd like!
DeleteGoth at the BBC was a tad hit and miss I thought.
ReplyDeleteAgreed - e.g. SGC: hit! but Strawberry Switchblade ffs ???!!!
