Somehow missed this fantastic post amongst all the unwrapping of.... no, not a hoover! Some fantastic images here C and some very happy looking women showing off their new "applicances"! I love watching 50s movies as the clothes/hats/makeup look fantastic but it was a very unhappy time for the female of the species. During the war years they'd had to manfully pick up the baton and do all the factory/labouring jobs whilst the men were away but once it was all over they were banished to the kitchen and the world of the housewife again. They were supposed to look immaculate and pretty all the time and be over the moon about receiving a hoover or ironing board for Christmas. Glad those days have gone but I still love those large skirted dresses (although totally impractical which was the point I suppose).
Hope you had a lovely Christmas Day with Mr SDS. Very mild up here which was kind of good as DD and her boyfriend had a long drive up but now safely back in their new abode in the south of Scotland.
Thanks Alyson, just a pick of visuals that appealed for one reason or another - I especially love the first and last images of Carole Lombard, I really like the style of that era. So right what you say about the life of the housewife though, I feel very fortunate. I'm no good at it for a start! A quiet, understated Christmas chez nous but with plenty of unhealthy food and drink, which is what it seems to boil down to! Very mild temps here too (and I see even warmer up your way) which makes life easier but is slightly disconcerting... Glad DD and boyfriend had easier time of it though for their long drive, and hope you all had a good get-together too.
Merry Christmas, C.
